Are you up for the Challenge?
It has been a little while since our last blog post so do apologise for the delays. We have been really busy behind the scenes organising the 3 Peaks Challenge, which is being held on 18th May, as well as many other items to do with hockey. This is our second year of running the 3 Peaks Challenge and we want to ensure it is a regular event in our calendar. We have gone all out this year and will be providing a trophy for the new 'Military Challenge Cup' and there will also be customised medals provided to all entrants. Fingers crossed these will arrive on time. This year we will have the full support of the Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF) who will be providing marshal duties, first aid response and signals. This is excellent news as now means our safety for the event is the finest that we can offer. I have been informed that at each checkpoint they will have water and jet boils available for entrants as well as warm weather blankets in case we have injuries and issues with entrants. We cannot thank the FIDF enough for their involvement and support of the 3 Peaks Challenge, and apparently, a little dickie bird tells me, they are entering 2 teams for the Military Challenge Cup :)
Keep an eye out for adverts for recruitment within the FIDF, as they undertake recruitment annually. This is a great opportunity to give something back to the Falkland Islands and to learn new skills, see more of the Islands and become self motivated. Not only will recruits obtain Royal Marine style training they will also learn mountain rescue techniques, survival skills, first aid, unarmed combat, signals training, map reading, powerboat training and a whole array of other skills. #forqueenandcountry
Not only have we been making sure all the necessary boxes are ticked for the 3 Peaks Challenge but you will notice that we have now secured extra gym slots to allow us to provide leagues for Under 8's, Under 11's. Under 14's and 15+ (adults). This is excellent news and now enables our junior players to be correctly segregated into the right age bracket and ensure games are much more competitive and more importantly, fun! We are advertising these leagues now and looking for registration as well as sponsors for the junior leagues. Do not miss the opportunity to sign up and become part of the ever growing ball hockey family. The leagues are due to start at the end of August and finish early December just in time for the Christmas break. There will be opportunities for new players to come down and try it out before the season starts and we are working on obtaining dates for around July time.
We have new teams created for the various leagues and hopefully once we have obtained sponsorship can have these shirts ready for the new season. Teams will be announced once sponsorship is obtained.
As our league is progressing it is exciting to learn that with another year to go and we may well see the first junior team attending an ISBHF international event. This is something that we have aspired to achieve since the inception of ball hockey in the Islands and we are chomping at the bit to finally see this happen. We are working closely with the ISBHF to ensure this happens.
During March we were able to meet with the Falkland Islands Adviser, Carolina Da Silva from the British Embassy in Uruguay to discuss the proposal of the ISBHF South American AA Tournament. With Carolina's help we will hopefully obtain points of contacts for each South American nation so that we can start dialogue in relation to setting up this tournament and ball hockey in South America. The ISBHF are 100% behind the Falkland Islands introducing this new tournament and are providing the help and expertise to ensure it happens. We are currently working on the first ISBHF conference to be held in the Falkland Islands to discuss the AA tournament with South American delegates. We are targeting 4 South American nations to begin with in the hope that this will inspire other nations to come on board and look to hold the conference in April 2019. ISBHF Marketing Director Colin Gennoe and ISBHF Referee in Chief Dave Shaw are going to present at the conference to help push the tournament forward.
There will be an opportunity for Dave Shaw to undertake referee training to all our current cohert of referees but also for our players. With this training all players and refs will then fully understand the ISBHF rules and regulations, which we hope will go a long way in improving our leagues.
You will also notice that our website has had a clean up and is now much more inviting and interactive for our members. We have more information being uploaded for each league and will eventually have a calendar showing dates of games on the right hand side of the website so all players can keep and eye on when they are playing. We always welcome new sponsors and you will notice we now have a dedicated tab at the bottom of our website showing our sponsors which appears on every page to ensure greater coverage. We do hope you enjoy the layout of the website now and please feel free to comment on our forums section if you would like to see further improvements.
With that I now must get ready to watch Liverpool play a nail biting game against Chelsea! A must win game for the Reds, well they all are really considering the machine that is Manchester City! 29 years we have waited to see them lift the Premier League and this so far is the closest to doing it........me nervous.......nooooo...........
