Change is afoot
Thankfully I have found some time to create a much needed blog post! What with work, children, ball hockey and other sports and Xtreme Adventure taking over a massive part of my life its become somewhat difficult to find the time to get onto the website and keep our subscribers informed of developments. We will endeavour to ensure our blog posts continue more frequently and cannot apologise enough for the delay in getting one out to you all.
Fundraising has been ramped up over the past few months as we look to raise funds to send a ball hockey team away to the Pilsen Challenge Cup in the Czech Republic from February 9-11th 2018. Various events have been undertaking from quiz nights to Halloween parties and so far we have raised £10,000! This is an incredible sum in such a short while and would not have been possible without the kind donations from FIC Ltd, SAAS, Argos Award sponsored by Argos Group Ltd and of course FIOGA who have been amazing in their support, providing £5,000 to the cause. We cannot thank you all enough and can only thank you by flying the Falklands Flag with pride at Pilsen. There is still an £18k total that needs to be met and hopefully with further fundraising and sponsorship from local companies as well as support from the community this target can be met.
You are all probably wondering why the Olympic ring logo is sitting at top of this blog but yet no mention of the Olympics at all?? Well to cut a long story short, we have been contacted by ISBHF President George Gortsos in relation to providing a report on the current setup of ball hockey in the Falkland Islands and its potential growth and development opportunities planned in the coming years. The ISBHF have aspirations and a vision to have ball hockey recognised as an Olympic sport and are requesting information from their member nations to provide supporting evidence to highlight to the Olympic committee as to the strength and following of the sport. I am unsure how the Falkland Islands would fit in relation to sending a team to the Olympic Games, if this opportunity ever came about, due to being an Overseas Territory of the UK. But if ball hockey is accepted then I guess we just simply cross that bridge when we get to it. Maybe it gives us an opportunity to be part of the Great Britain team, who knows but I am for one excited about the prospects of the idea.
We all know and love the referee....don't we?? ;) A new post game referee report is now being provided for all ball hockey games to help provide transparency on calls and decisions made during games. Hopefully this will go a long way to helping provide further clarification on the reason for calls during games, yes the ref will provide reasons during game days but we think this helps to reinforce the issue. You will find all post match reports in the forum section of our website. Please go on and check it out and feel free to comment as this is one area we are trying to promote. We want more subscribers to be able to get on the site and engage with us further and the forum is one of the best ways of doing that.
Training dates have been agreed with the Leisure Centre for the Pilsen Stanley Hawks team and will now be on Sundays from 12:00-1:00pm. Please ensure all players turn up for these training sessions as we will be going over the drills and tactics that will be utilised during the tournament. Rafa Sotomayor will also be on hand to provide fitness training and has also suggested that we look to be seen in the community undertaking training. We whole heartedly agree with this as we must show to our community that as a team we are dedicated, focused and committed to the cause. So we will be looking for training slots during the week to whip the team into shape.
Today is also an important day for the Falkland Islands as we the electorate get to vote in the general election for the next lot of MLA's. You may be wondering why I am talking about political items on a sporting page?? Well it so happens that at times sport and politics do merge. There has been a lot of interesting debate on social media and other local news outlets as candidates promote themselves and look for our much needed vote. Its the one time where everyone has the power to make a choice and potentially make change. A few of the items that were discussed were in relation to sports and the lack of a facility to cater for all sport and to support and develop sport further. The Islands boasts a lot of sports clubs all vying for the prime time spots in the Leisure Centre and even with the fantastic support and assistance of the Leisure Centre they cannot cater for all and so therefore we will have disgruntled people. Not only is it difficult for sports clubs to get space and time its also very difficult for Joe Blogg's to walk in and get floor time. With health of the nation much talked about, sport is one massive way to help solve this problem and without a new facility it cannot achieve its goals. But its not all doom and gloom as FIOGA are pushing forward and looking to alleviate this problem and provide this much needed facility, so it will be interesting to see what our new MLA's do and if they will support the aspiration and visions of FIOGA and the many sports clubs in the Islands.
Travel was also much discussed and is a massive issue for the Islands and not only does it effect the man/woman on the street but it has a massive effect for sports clubs who are trying to get away to sporting events to compete and fly the flag for the Falkland Islands. The highly priced flights are the biggest outlay for sports clubs and with ball hockey for example our £18k that we need to raise is to help pay for the 12+ team members flights from the Islands. With hard work and continued belief and further support from local companies and the community we fully believe we can reach this goal.
So with the little X now checked off in 5 boxes I await the results this evening with anticipation and hope that whoever is voted in looks to those points above and looks to support our sporting community as a fantastic medium to spread the word of the Falkland Islands.
Game time tonight so preparations are needed...if I can pull myself away from this amazing strawberry milkshake recently acquired from the FIC Crozier Café. I swear that place is the sole reason for my weight gain! The BLT's, Pork Humba and milkshakes are to die for :)
