An invitation for the Falklands Islands Ball Hockey Team to play at the 2018 International Ball Hockey Tournament in Pilzen, Czech Republic was this season’s second international headline. Earlier in the season we were joined by Canadian ball hockey coaches Gary Slavin and Dave Weloy who held daily training sessions over a period of two weeks to improve both our skills as players but also, and perhaps more importantly for the future of the club, our skills as coaches. The fire they ignited under our hockey-sticks is still going strong and the invitation for the tournament in Pilzen was therefore met with immense gratification. As with all international tournaments one of the main restraints for local teams attending is funding. And although there are local funding bodies in place for these situations, there is also (quite rightly) a need for sports clubs to show their enthusiasm by raising funds themselves. Over the next couple of months Falklands Xtreme Sports will be hosting several fundraising events through which we hope to both engage the local community in ball hockey and raise some serious funds for our cause. Saturday night saw in the first of these events: an Xtreme Quiz Night.
The doors of the Parish Hall opened at 7pm and the room slowly filled as the 9 teams entered and took their seats. Five rounds of questions, two picture-rounds and two game-rounds lay ahead of us. Marcus Morrison (our Quizmaster) did the necessary introductions and also directed our focus to some tables at the side of the room where a superb buffet by Michelle’s café was laid out. A few minutes later, with a drink and sausage roll in hand, we were ready to begin. Round by round we battled through the various topics such as “Sports”, “Film and Music” and my personal favourite “Local Affairs”. Intermixed with the question rounds were the two excellent picture-rounds and game-rounds. Winners of the first game round, the “Steven Hawkings Dance School”, were top of the leader board all the way through until the last game-round during which “Yaaaas Queen” overtook them and came out in first place. First prize for the quiz was not only a generous £100 in vouchers donated by Saddle Direct but also an Xtreme Mine Detonating-day organised by BACTEC! Second prize was donated by FIC in the form of £50 in Capstan vouchers and third place (taken by “Creative Steak”) won a case of Budweiser donated by Falklands Xtreme Adventures.
Falklands Xtreme Sports would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who attended and helped us raise the first £660 pounds towards our target! We would further like to extend our gratitude to all the Ball Hockey Club sponsors and for the donated prizes. The next Xtreme fundraising event will take place on the 28th of October in the form of an Xtreme Monster Halloween Party at the Globe Tavern. Besides the awesome DJ, prize for best-dressed and bar extension we will also be raffling off two places on the Xtreme Mine Detonating-day generously donated by Gemma and Alice of the winning quiz team “Yaaaas Queen”! Hope to see you all there! – T.
ED: Thanks to our guest blogger Tom Busbridge for this awesome article on the Quiz Night. I shall look to be getting another video blog up this week to let you all know where we are with fundraising and the latest up and comings with Falklands Xtreme Sports. Anyhow........
