That's all folks!
An epic ball hockey season came to a close with the final of the Dynasafe BACTEC Xtreme Cup, and what a final it was! If we needed an advert for ball hockey this was it, from tough tackling, breakaways, fantastic saves, silky passing, one on ones and last minute goals. The Hill Cove Hurricanes (sponsored by Terry's UPVC Doors & Windows) took the cup with a last gasp winner with 1 minute to go from the Goose Green Cavaliers (sponsored by FIC). The Cavs were chasing their first cup win of the season and looked odds on to get it after narrowly dominating the first half but the Hurricanes showed why they were worthy winners of the Morrison Xtreme League by piling on the pressure and snatching the win. Credit to all players for showing how fast paced and exciting the game of ball hockey is.
The 3rd placed play off was a slightly different game with the Port Howard Patriots (sponsored by SATLAN) romping home with a 14-10 victory over the Walker Creek Warriors (sponsored by Saddle Direct). David Phillips who was chasing the top goal scorers position for the cup was on fine form and managed to bang in 4 goals to claim top spot. The Warriors did spark into life near the end of the game but with time against them just could not cut the deficit down quick enough.
So with the final whistle blowing the 2016-17 ball hockey season came to a close.....for the players! The work continues in the background as we plan for the youth league to start, which looks now to be September and to slingshot alongside the adult league. The Stanley Leisure Centre have been fantastic in working with us to book our 2017-18 season as well as provide ways of allowing us to introduce our youth league. Hats off to Mark Cook and his team for going out of their way to help us, not just now but at the start, as without them we would not have had the gym time. Appreciated guys and gals.
LAGA Sports are beavering away as I speak producing the new youth kits in time for the new season. 3 of our adult shirt sponsors are continuing their support and providing the funds required to get the youth shirts. So we will have the youth Port Howard Patriots (sponsored by SATLAN) Goose Green Cavaliers (sponsored by FIC) and Walker Creek Warriors (sponsored by Saddle Direct). We are currently in negotiations with two sponsors for teams Camilla Creek Crusaders and the Fitzroy Foxes. 1 more shirt design is being sorted and the club looking for a sponsor, so if you are interested then let us know on email firstname.lastname@example.org or Facebook us.
Not only are the shirts underway but we are also currently in discussion with the ISBHF and the CBHA in relation to bringing down 2 coaches to assist the developed of our youth and adult players. Focus will be on the youth as we look to get a team together to send away to the World Championships in 2018 which is possibly going to be in Canada, yet to be confirmed. Check out the latest ISBHF minutes in our new dedicated ISBHF page. You will be able to check out their website as well as catch up on the latest news. Keep a look out for the their latest newsletter as the Falkland Islands will have an article in relation to our development and growth. September could be a massive month for the club as we move into pastures new and with support from the ISBHF and CBHA and their coaching team the sport can only move forward to greater things.
Its hard to believe that Falklands Xtreme Sports is only 2 months away from being 1 year old! Time fly's when you are having fun :) Crazy to think that it all started out as a logo, a concept, that grew and developed into a successful club that boasts 30 adult ball hockey players and 80+ peewee and junior players....and this is just ball hockey! So thank you to all that have helped and especially as follows:
Sponsors (who without this would not be possible)
Saddle Direct Saddle Staff
South Atlantic Trading Satlan
Petra Gilding Photography Petra Sophie Gilding
The Morrison Family Priscilla Morrison Betts
Terrys UPVC Doors & Windows Janet-John Jaffray
All the players who have participated in the three tournaments and all those people who helped ref and score. A special mention to Elle Jaffray and Terri Biggs for always taking time out to help score
Massive thank you to the ISBHF for the support and for allowing us to be a part of their amazing family of ball hockey nations.
FIOGA for allowing us to be a member of their organisation and to the IJS for enabling us to setup an affiliation programme to provide an out of school hockey club.
And last but not least to Mari-Ann Clarke who has devoted her time and effort into running the whole of the IJS ball hockey out of school club and for always being supportive
So we look to 2017-18 with new challenges and further opportunities for the community, young or old, to get involved with not only ball hockey but soon to be Paint Balling, Laser Tag and Nerf Wars in our new Xtreme Battleground & Adventure Park.....you heard it first here ;) Work is currently underway on this with our sponsor the FIC, who without, this would pretty much still be a pipe dream. With their support, assistance, provision of land and premises we can truly offer something extra to the whole community, not everything but its a start.
Keep an eye out in the post for your invitation to the awards night for the 2016-17 season and hopefully it will be a night to remember and help to bring a close to the season as well as bring in the new one. Until then keep an eye out for updates, blog posts and snippets....me, well the break includes camping, shooting, fishing and kayaking....with the rain we have the kayak may be needed a lot more often than I would like!
